Coal Gangue

As a "by-product solid waste" of the coal industry, coal gangue has long been stockpiled, becoming an ecological pain point in coal-producing areas — the cumulative stockpiling volume across the country has exceeded 7 billion tons, forming over 2,600 gangue hills. These not only occupy a large amount of land but also easily cause problems such as soil pollution, water seepage, and spontaneous combustion that releases harmful gases. The coal gangue utilization technology developed by CDI has achieved major breakthroughs, and its large-scale disposal has realized the dual breakthroughs of reduction and harmlessness.

In 2021, Hebei Qingfeng Green Power Industrial Company 13MT Solid Waste Comprehensive Utilization Project was successfully put into operation. The project handles 10 million tons of steel slag and 300 million tons of slag annually, equipped with a complete production line and 8 roller vertical roller mills. It covers production workshops for steel slag crushing and storage, slag storage, steel slag screening, grinding feeding, grinding, and finished product storage, as well as non-production facilities such as a central control room, a quality inspection center, and a main substation. The main products include double-mixed micro-powder, artificial stone, road aggregates, autoclaved blocks, and permeable bricks for sponge cities.

The signing of the Shanxi Datong 10 million ton coal gangue comprehensive utilization project (Phase I) between CDI and Zhongneng Jianke Rui Technology (Datong) Co., Ltd. in 2025 is another milestone in its comprehensive disposal of coal gangue. Another major breakthrough following the 10 million tons/year comprehensive utilization project of coal gangue by Qingfeng Green Energy in Wu'an, Hebei.

As China’s first 10-million-ton-level demonstration project for comprehensive utilization of coal gangue, the successful implementation of this project will drive the development of the industry. For instance, the coal gangue classified utilization standards and prefabricated building material product specifications formulated under the project will accelerate the transformation of coal gangue comprehensive utilization from an environmental protection issue to a strategic emerging industry.

The projects developed by CDI have achieved a deep alignment between resource recycling and the "dual carbon" goals, significantly alleviating employment pressure in local resource-based cities during their transition period. Meanwhile, by building a complete industrial chain of "coal gangue of solid waste → new building materials → new components and parts → green prefabricated buildings", the projects have promoted in-depth integration with the solid waste treatment industry.

The 10-million-ton-level coal gangue projects in Wu’an and Datong involving CDIare not only a typical example of the positive cycle of "technological innovation → ecological improvement → economic growth", but also serve as a key vehicle for promoting the green transformation of resource-based regions and implementing the national "dual carbon" and circular economy strategies. They provide a solution that delivers tripartite benefits—environmental, economic, and social—for industry and regional development.
